Home Search Topics Contact About | No TV In HellLuke 16:19-23: There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man*s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham*s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
The rich man had very few concerns but the ones he had were all-consuming. What is revealed and what is not revealed about the place of torments should be shocking. The rich man lifted up his eyes. He could see. He could see Abraham and Lazarus. He could see that they were in a better place than he was. Verse 24: And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.The rich man could see that Abraham and Lazarus had cool water to enjoy while he had none. He was tormented in a flame. Verses 25-26: But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Abraham reminded the rich man of the cushy life he had and that he hadn*t helped the poor man. If he didn*t already know, the rich man learned that He couldn*t go where Abraham and Lazarus were and, even if they wanted to, they couldn*t go where the he was. Verse 27: Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father*s house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.The rich man was concerned about his five brothers. He knew that if they followed his example they too would come to the place of torments. They may have been the most important people to him while he was alive. He cared about the right things when it was too late. In the place of torments he finally prayed for them. But his prayer was too late and his prayer was to someone who had no power to answer it. He prayed to Abraham. He could not pray to God. He was totally separated from God. The rich man seems to be totally alone. There was no one who could help him. There was no one and nothing to enjoy. Abraham and Lazarus enjoyed fellowship and everything they needed or wanted. In my lifetime, I have enjoyed many things. I enjoyed TV. I enjoyed watching and playing baseball. I enjoyed swimming and fishing and hunting. I enjoyed music. None of those things are in the place of torments. Whatever you enjoy on earth won*t be in the place of torments. There will be no sex there, no vacations, no golf, no hobbies whatsoever, no work or accomplishment to satisfy you, nothing at all to enjoy and nothing at all that will ever satisfy. Dear friends, please don*t take lightly this matter of receiving Jesus and asking Him to save you. God Himself is concerned about where you will spend eternity. 2 Peter 3:9a . . . c: The Lord is . . . not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
He is so concerned that He sent Jesus to die and pay for your sins and mine so that we don*t have to pay for them like the rich man will forever be paying for his. |
